The first Shabbat after October 7th, I began the ritual of baking challah and vowed to keep doing it until the last hostage returned home. I have loved it so much that even now, with the living hostages back, I continue to bake.
I’m drawn to the term Still Life. A painting captures a moment that remains still for eternity, just as the observance of Shabbat has been performed by my ancestors for generations. It is the moment in the week when everything stands still, when I can feel connected to all who came before me, performing the same sacred ritual. It makes my life still and in harmony.
